The paper traces the historical development of support staff in the U. S. Libraries.
It discusses the role played by COLT (Council on Library Technicians) in establishing the position of the support staff. In addition, it discusses the establishment of SSIRT (Support Staff Interests Round Table) at ALA and its role in advancing the position of the support staff. Lastly it describes the Library Support Staff Certification Program at ALA which was began in 2010.
